Guidelines for Measuring and Cutting Your Hair Donation
- Ensure hair is a minimum of 12 inches for proper hair donation length. Our most asked for length from children is 15 inches, so we encourage you wait and grow a longer ponytail to have the most effect on a child in need.
Pull curly hair directly for more precise measurements.- Start the measuring tape at the start of the ponytail.
- Start the measuring tape at the start of the ponytail.
- Stop determining where the ponytail starts to thin due to layers or split ends.
- Hair needs to be tidy and dry. Wet hair will mold in shipping and will be discarded.
- Hair can not be permed, color-treated, or highlighted. Momentary coloring or highlights that wash out are appropriate but must be completely washed out before cutting. Gray hair is accepted.
- Connect hair into at least 4 sections (six are even much better) around the head for a more generous donation. Hair that is pulled into one ponytail or braid lead to a loss of up to 4 inches of hair. To do so:
- Make a center part
- Beginning with this center part, part the hair over the top of each ear. This will produce four areas of hair.
- To develop 4 ponytails, tie the hair in front of each ear into ponytails, and then tie the hair behind each ear into ponytails.Make sure each ponytail or braid is tightly protected. Hair that is loosely wrapped tends to become loose when shipped, making it unusable. PLEASE be sure hair is tight and protected with numerous elastic band 2-3 inches apart.
- Cut hair above the rubber band.
- Seal all ponytails in a Ziploc bag.
- Place zip lock bag along with hair donation form, barcode or ID number in a sealed envelope addressed to:
PLANS NOT CONTAINING A HAIR DONOR FORM, BARCODE OR ID NUMBER ARE UNDERSTOOD TO BE ANONYMOUS DONATIONS.
